Queer Tartan 1
Medhurst Tartan for Dressing Dykes
July 2024
Dressing Dykes, the brand of Eleanor Medhurst was the first Queer Tartan to be designed. I took the purples and pinks from her book which was the reason for her book tour. She was kind enough to post a story and send pictures of ehr wearing the silk scarf outside Argonaught Books.
Eleanor Medhurst is a historian specializing in lesbian fashion. She is the author of the blog “Dressing Dykes” and has worked on notable exhibitions such as “Queer Looks” and “Queer the Pier” at the Brighton Museum. Medhurst’s work focuses on uncovering and documenting the history and impact of lesbian fashion, a topic often overlooked in both fashion and queer histories (PopMatters) (Literary Hub).
Her first book, “Unsuitable: A History of Lesbian Fashion,” delves into the diverse styles and historical significance of lesbian fashion across centuries and cultures. It explores how fashion has been used to express identity and resist societal norms, highlighting figures from Queen Christina of Sweden to modern lesbian icons. The book aims to provide a comprehensive and inclusive look at how clothing has played a crucial role in the lives of queer women (Lampoon Magazine) (HURST).
Medhurst has been featured in various media, including Grazia, Cosmopolitan, and podcasts such as Cameron Esposito’s “Queery” and Gillian Anderson’s “What Do I Know?!” Her work is highly regarded for its thorough research and engaging narrative, bringing to light the often-hidden histories of lesbian fashion (Literary Hub) (Lampoon Magazine).
