Kafe Kweer
July 2024
Kafe Kweer is an LGBTQ+ focused, sober café and art space in Edinburgh, located at 5 St. Peter’s Buildings. It was founded by Oskar Hansen and Zak Riding, opening in September 2020 as a response to the need for alcohol-free social spaces within the queer community. The café aims to provide a safe and inclusive environment where individuals of all ages can socialize, enjoy food and drinks, and participate in various events without the pressure of alcohol consumption (Alcohol Change UK) (The Skinny).
Kafe Kweer hosts a variety of events, including poetry readings, cabarets, and community meetups. It also collaborates with local queer artists and organizations to offer exhibitions and workshops. The café is open every day and serves a range of vegan and vegetarian options, making it a popular spot for those looking to connect with the LGBTQ+ community in a relaxed setting (Alcohol Change UK) (Edinburgh Guide).
The founders, both with backgrounds in nightlife and the arts, wanted to create a balanced space that complements Edinburgh’s vibrant queer nightlife scene by offering a quieter, more relaxed alternative (The Skinny) (Dish Cult).
